HOW CAN NEUROPLASTICITY RECREATE WHO WE ARE?

WHAT IS NEUROPLASTICITY?

Until quite recently it was believed that our brain doesn’t change after childhood, but we know now that this is not true. The brain is very flexible and highly adaptable: neuroplasticity.

How does neuroplasticity work?

By learning or experiencing something new, we create new pathways in our brain. When we repeatedly do this new thing, we create new connections in our brain; we rewire the brain: neuroplasticity in action.

Why is neuroplasticity important?

It’s quite a relief to know that, regardless of our age or gender, we can change old bad habits. We have the ability to improve ourselves continually, recreate ourselves, become smarter if you will. As we live in a constantly evolving world, we can rely on neuroplasticity to help us keep up with the ever-changing environment.

Should you find yourself in a stage of your life that you have become somebody you never told you would be, don’t be discouraged. You can always rewire yourself and once again turn it all around. There is no age limit for this; all you need is enough persistence. Every change is difficult at first, but not impossible thanks to neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity example:

Let’s think of a person who always wanted to be fitter, but he could never commit to an exercise regime and appropriate food choices. How can neuroplasticity assist him in achieving his goal? For example, if he commits to exercising every morning for a month, he would create a new pathway in his brain at the end of the month. As this new brain pathway had been established after enough repetition, this behaviour becomes normal and non-negotiable. The person now exercises in the same way as brushing his teeth. His workout is now part of his hygiene routine.

Often, we need a stimulant, an inspiration, a coach to become a better version of ourselves.
