What is methylation and why it is important?
In brief, it’s a biochemical process involving a group of ‘methyl molecules’- and it’s essential for your body to function normally.
For example:
Every cell needs adequate methylation for its normal growth and repair.
Methylation helps the body to ‘detox’ and eliminate potentially dangerous substances.
Proper methylation is particularly important for the brain and the neurotransmitters that influence mood.
When optimal methylation occurs, it has significant positive impact on
DNA production, neurotransmitter production, detoxification, fat metabolism etc..
When the methylation switch is not working properly a number of important molecules cannot be efficiently produced, including: glutathione, coenzyme Q10, melatonin, serotonin and so on.
OVERMETHYLATION SYMTOMS:
- Anxiety
- Poor concentration
- Panic disorders
- Low motivation
- Easily frustrated
- Insomnia
- Paranoia
- Hyperactivity
- Food/chemical sensitivities
- High pain threshold
- Tinnitus
- Depression (may also be a symptom of undermethylation)
- High energy
- Highly creative
- Histamine intolerance
Those who are overmethylating have copious amounts of SAMe and easily assimilate activated forms of folate and vitamins B6 and B12. Overmethylators also seem to experience high energy levels when they consume a vegan or plant-based diet, which provides a large amount of folate. Additionally, an abundance of methionine-rich foods such as red meats, eggs, and dairy can exacerbate symptoms for overmethylators because this amino acid is also part of the process of making SAMe. Overmethylators should avoid all supplements that include SAMe and methionine.
UNDERMETHYLATION SYMTOMS:
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Nervousness and perfectionism
- Addictions
- Insomnia
- Headaches
- Obsessive compulsive behaviors
- Paranoia
- High libido
- Allergies
- Digestive issues
Undermethylators should give special priority to getting adequate high quality protein and restrict foods that contain folates (e.g. beans, spinach, asparagus, avocados, etc.)
Undermethylation causes low level of serotonin the most important neurotransmitter for mood). Protein will promote production of serotonin and other neurotransmitters. At the same time food with folate (Vitamin B9) should be avoided as folate increases serotonin reuptake in the brain, effectively decreasing serotonin concentrations.
The reason why I think this topic deserves attention, is that once again we see that one diet fits all approach is simply not working. And how often people with anxiety or depression tendency or digestive issues, to name a few, are being adviced to take heavy medications by doctors and factor such as methylation cycle is not even considered as possible solution to the problem. Eating right for your individual needs has the power to transform you to your full potential.
