People often believe that they inherited a particular sickness from their parents, but in fact, they inherited the food habits and lifestyle choices of their parents, which lead to the illness. Health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, gout, weight issues, cognitive decline, mental disorders, the list is long, are self-inflicted in ninety percent of the cases.
Let’s take, for example, type 2 diabetes: impairment in the way the body regulates and uses sugar (glucose) as a fuel. This condition develops over a few decades, and the symptoms are often ignored and perceived as a “part of everyday life” or “part of aging.” What happens if you are raised on a diet that constantly elevates your blood sugar over the norms every day? Well, in the beginning, you are young, and your body will work hard to normalize the situation. However, forcing your organs to work harder than they should, will age them faster! Inevitably, you will reach the point where your body will be exhausted from this hard work, and then is the time you get “diagnosed.” The good news is this case of scenario is absolutely preventable. The point here is not about shaming ways of eating because, at the end of the day, nutrition is not an elaborated subject in school! How would our parents know what optimal nutrition is? How would anyone know? As children, we simply replicate what we eat at home, and often those meals mean much more to us than just food: they mean memories, sentiments; they mean love. All these emotions are, of course, beautiful and necessary, but food is more than that; it is what makes us feel on top of this world or exactly the opposite. It might sound like an extreme statement, but the fact of the matter is, the impact of food is greatly ignored and underestimated!
Another great example is gout (gout is caused by a condition known as hyperuricemia, where there is too much uric acid in the body.) So, your parents wanted the best for you, right! What was considered a “rich man food” in the last 100 years was meat from all kinds of animals and their byproducts! It was deemed that eating three times per day animal protein will make you strong, robust, and impenetrable. Well, not exactly! Animal protein takes many hours to digest. It is highly acidic and contains no fiber. Remember, there was a time that also obesity was perceived as a sign of wealth! It goes without saying that we can no longer copy/paste those “traditions” and start relying on science.
MY MOTHER/FATHER HAS IT, SO I AM BOUND TO HAVE IT TOO
Instead of you falling into your parents’ footsteps, in terms of food habits, you should show them a better way and even help them reverse diseases. It sounds like a miracle, but it is only allowing the knowledge to guide you the way. The food coma after Thanksgiving, after The New Year Eve dinner, The New Year resolution approach on 1 of January (because you gained weight over the holidays and probably at one point experienced insulin resistance), does this sound like an intelligent and thriving state of the body? On the contrary, it is an outdated way of celebration. If we are celebrating, an act that is on itself meant as happiness, why then is the outcome detrimental to our biology?
NEW WORLD NEEDS NEW TRADITIONS
Nowadays, it is estimated that the future populations will easily live to hundred years old and above. However, the big question here is, are you going to be a thriving individual or one that relies daily on pills such as blood sugar and blood pressure regulators, digestive, sleeping, energy booster pills, and more and more. How many people above fifty (which was considered “old” in the past and young 🙂 in today’s world) are leading a pill-free life? Medications are a brilliant invention, but one that should be a simple short-term intervention when needed and not a life-supporting everyday event. The time has come that we humans act up to date and create new traditions around food, traditions that put our health on the pedestal and celebrate first and for most our health.
