How to have a better brain? A question that many of us google and find thousands of contradicting answers on the internet.
THE GENERIC ANSWERS
Sufficient quality and quantity of sleep
Adequate nutrition approach
Movement
Socializing
Love
Purpose
There is no particular order; however, we all need those elements to reach the potential of our brain as much as possible. But how many of those “ingredients” do we need to level up our IQ?
THE DETAILS
Sleep
Do we all need eight hours of sleep? It’s good generic advice; however, depending on your life stage, those needs might vary. Too much sleep is just as bad as too little sleep. The ideal length of sleep will be slightly different for everyone.
Nutritional approach
We can all agree that we need food; otherwise, we can’t survive. What is the ideal diet for your brain? The generic answer will be: cut out highly processed food, eat enough, but make sure you don’t overeat, and have a balanced diet( meaning eat a variety and include all macronutrients: carbohydrates, protein, and fats.) BALANCE DIET, this one is the most confusing! Sounds good and somehow comforting, but in reality, this approach brings about mediocre results in terms of having a superman’s brain. WHY? Because once again, our nutritional needs depend on our gene’s expression ( EPIGENETICS: YOUR ACTIONS HAVE AN IMPACT ON YOUR GENES), biological makeup, age, gender, and lifestyle. An athlete will require more glycogen replenishment than a nerd spending all day on a screen. Not to forget food intolerances and food allergies. Blueberries might be a great brain booster for one, but for other who is allergic to them will result in a brain fog and general discomfort. In fact, food and sometimes the lack of it ( intermittent fasting) is one of the most significant factors in reaching the state of productivity, creativity, and extreme focus mode. The best diet is based on individuality.
Movement
It’s a well-known fact that sedentary life will slow our brain. Should we then move as much as possible? Both extremes, just as with sleep and food, won’t wake up the genius in us. An exhausted body is simply not an optimal machine. But how much is too much? Once again, for one, a five-kilometer run might feel like there is no more energy left for whatever, forget about brilliant ideas, and for another, a twenty-kilometer run might feel like a walk in the park. Of course, everything is trainable, but let’s build it up slowly and strategically. You don’t want to lead a life of constant overtraining and an “empty brain.”
Socialising
Human beings are social animals. Should we live in isolation, depression, demotivation, and lack of lust for life will appear. However, should we surround ourselves with the wrong type of people, bad habits, low self-esteem, anger, sadness, and disappointments will hinder our happiness. A sad brain is not productive; on the contrary! So being social is great generic advice, but let’s say you are in the wrong environment; you will be better of with a great book and even live in your imaginary world as a surviving coping mechanism.
Love
We all know the feeling of being in love: it feels like we have wings and everything is possible( at least in most cases :-)). What better than this for our brain stimulation? The problem is: Are you in love with the right person? In the beginning, it’s all roses. Still, in the long run, if this relationship makes you become somebody you are not and have negative impacts on you, you will become slowly miserable and most likely engage in activities that will harm your brain. Love is wonderful, but should not be wasted on the wrong person.
Purpose
Without a purpose, the brain has no reason to better itself; there is no motivation. However, the intent is different for everyone. For one, it might be improving the world; for others might simply be better than yesterday. Regardless of the “size,” all purposes are equally important and should be respected. That’s all great, is there any problem? Sometimes the purpose we opt for might be the wrong choice, influenced by our surroundings! How to choose soundly? Only a clear mind can be objective.
